I’ve been meaning to focus on Elena’s perspective in the beginning of the show since a while now because I feel she got overshadowed by Stefan’s, Damon’s and Katherine’s story and only somewhere along season 2 did I start seeing her without comparing her to anyone else. There were windows between that time that I saw her as her own character, her own person but they were only windows. So this is my attempt to explore her character further and try to see what I missed on my first glance. As a DE shipper, I’ll give my insights as little as they are about them as well. I am opinionated, I must warn you and I do criticize SE. So if you are a SE shipper and don’t want to be offended, you’d better just keep scrolling.

In her first scene, she is writing a diary entry on the first day of school

Dear diary, today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. My smile will say “I’m fine, thank you.” “Yes, I feel much better.” I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh, be someone new. It’s the only way I’ll make it through.

Comparing it to her flashback in 3x22 in her bedroom, you see how much she has been affected by the accident. The girl who used to wake up smiling to Pink(however unrealistic it may be) now has to force herself to fake a smile for others. I remember the first time I saw this scene, I got the feeling that Elena was trying to become someone new because she hadn’t dealt with her parents’ death. It was like she was running away from everything her life represented before the accident. Later in 1x20 we get to know that she feels guilty for her parents’ death because they had to come pick her up from a party as she blew off family night. But even in doing that, she held onto to the girl she used to be and couldn’t let her go as she said in 3x11.

In the scene with Jenna and Jeremy, you can see Elena is the adult in the situation. She tells Jenna that it’s all about the coffee and reminds her that she has a presentation with her thesis adviser and even reassures her that they’ll be fine. She asks Jeremy if he’s okay and she is genuinely concerned but he doesn’t want to talk about it.

Elena is distracted by the graveyard while her and Bonnie drive down to school. She wants to start fresh but she can’t seem to let go. She asks Bonnie to predict something and Damon’s crow hits against their car and Bonnie loses control. She asks Elena if she is fine and she says that she can’t be afraid of car crashes for the rest of her life. I can’t help but chuckle at what Bonnie says next

I predict this year is going to be kick ass. And I predict all the sad and dark times are over and you are going to be beyond happy.

Obviously her witchy senses weren’t speaking to her then. But Elena actually believes what Bonnie has to say and she looks forward to it.

Elena wants to take things back to how they were before she started dating Matt but as we saw from the flashbacks in 3x22, he was into the relationship a lot more than Elena was and he finds it hard to move on from. Caroline comes up to Elena and asks if she is good and she gives her prepared answer “I’m fine, thank you…Yes, much better”

You haven’t seen crazy, Jeremy! I gave you a summer pass, but I am done watching you destroy yourself. No, no, no, you know what? Go ahead. Keep it up. But just know that I am going to be there to ruin your buzz every time, you got it? Jeremy, I know who you are. And it’s not this person. So don’t be this person.

At least to me she does. 5 years ago I had an accident in which I got burnt and as result of it I was left with scars. After I got out from the hospital everyone would ask me if I was fine and as customary answer I said yes but I never meant it. It didn’t matter because I knew they didn’t care.

When Elena looks at her parents’ graves, the lyrics play are “You’re a lonely soul /because you won’t let go/ of anything you hold”. At this point and even later, Elena finds it very hard to let go of her parents and everything that they represented.

Then Damon comes along and creeps the hell out of her for kicks with his crow and fog and she makes her way out when she trips and finds Stefan in front of her.

I can’t help but snort when Elena asks him if he was following her and he says no. And we have another Stefan and Elena scene which is cliche and awkward.

When Stefan comes by to drop off her diary and says he didn’t read it because memories are too important, Elena agrees and feels as if he is the first person in the world to have gotten her. But the fact of the matter is that sometimes we need to be able to let go of those memories which Elena clearly isn’t.

I like how manipulative Stefan is when he says that his parents passed away and looks at Elena and he lies about Damon, of course.

Looking at Elena blush at the thought of going to the Back to the school party to meet Stefan, just makes me think how simple it was for Stefan to get into her life. She felt trapped by her inability to let go of her parents so she was searching for something new and Stefan represented that. Also, I think it’s the first time she has felt attracted to someone. As she says later she and Matt started dating because they owed it to themselves to see if they were more but with Stefan there was no doubt. She knew the minute she saw him that she was into him.

Best part of the episode:

Bonnie: That was weird. When I touched you, I saw a crow.
Elena: What?
Bonnie: A crow. There was fog, a man.

You know what that means: Damon. I’d like to revel in the very fact that even without sharing a scene in the pilot, we still have cues which are probably more important than the cliched scenes scenes that SE share.

Elena: Last spring. . my parents’ car drove off of a bridge into the lake. And I was in the backseat and I survived, but…they didn’t. So that’s my story.
Stefan: You won’t be sad forever, Elena.

That is what she wanted to hear and for the new guy to show genuine concern to her is big thing.

Elena: Matt and I, together we just, I don’t know, it wasn’t, um…it wasn’t…

Stefan: Passionate?

Elena: No. No, it wasn’t passionate…

And Damon/Elena pilot cue number 2. I’d like to believe that the writers knew that Stefan and Elena would never be passionate and they threw in this line to highlight what Elena wanted from a relationship. Looking back now after watching 3x22 the way she perks up to “passionate” as if she remembered some forgotten memory makes you wonder how exactly does compulsion work because one is able to recollect those memories if compelled to remember or on entering transition so it must lie in one’s subconscious and one is aware of it on some level.

Nothing I haven’t commented upon before. Elena keeps trying to convince herself about something but she never really follows her own advice.

Stefan: I had a plan. I wanted to change who I was; create a life as someone new, someone without the past.
Elena: Without the pain.
Elena/Stefan: Someone alive.
Elena: But it’s not that easy. The bad things stay with you.
Stefan: They follow you. You can’t escape them, as much as you want to.

Elena: All you can do is be ready for the good. So when it comes, you invite it in, because you need it. I need it.

I think this sums up the pilot episode completely from Elena’s perspective. She failed at her plan to get through the day by pretending and being someone new. I like the emphasis on someone “new” throughout the episode because in the beginning the reason why Stefan lightened up Elena’s world was because he was new and he cared and that is what she needed in that moment. I mean if you look at their relationship before she got to know he was a vampire it was quite ordinary and nothing that’d catch your eye. Then she got to know he was a vampire and at first she was apalled but then she felt safe around him because he couldn’t die like her parents and she clung on to him. As she said in 3x22, he came into her life when she needed someone and she fell for him instantly. I can be certain that if some other guy came in his place, she would have fallen for him. She didn’t fall in love with who he was at first but who he represented.

And then Stefan comes over

Stefan: I know it’s late. But, uh…I needed to know that you were ok.
Elena: You know, for months, that’s all anyone’s wondered about me. If I’ll be ok.
Stefan: What do you tell them?
Elena: That I’ll be fine.
Stefan: Do you ever mean it?
Elena: Ask me tomorrow. It’s warmer in the house. We can talk. Would you like to come in?
Stefan: Yes.

This echoes Elena’s diary entry while she was in the graveyard. Someone noticed that she didn’t mean it. Best part of the episode:

Bonnie: That was weird. When I touched you, I saw a crow.
Elena: What?
Bonnie: A crow. There was fog, a man.

You know what that means: Damon. I’d like to revel in the very fact that even without sharing a scene in the pilot, we still have cues which are probably more important than the cliched scenes scenes that SE share.

Elena: Last spring. . my parents’ car drove off of a bridge into the lake. And I was in the backseat and I survived, but…they didn’t. So that’s my story.
Stefan: You won’t be sad forever, Elena.

That is what she wanted to hear and for the new guy to show genuine concern to her is big thing.

Elena: Matt and I, together we just, I don’t know, it wasn’t, um…it wasn’t…

Stefan: Passionate?

Elena: No. No, it wasn’t passionate…

And Damon/Elena pilot cue number 2. I’d like to believe that the writers knew that Stefan and Elena would never be passionate and they threw in this line to highlight what Elena wanted from a relationship. Looking back now after watching 3x22 the way she perks up to “passionate” as if she remembered some forgotten memory makes you wonder how exactly does compulsion work because one is able to recollect those memories if compelled to remember or on entering transition so it must lie in one’s subconscious and one is aware of it on some level.

Feeling too much emotion and unable to control his vampiric nature while doing so, his cover slips for a second and Elena sees it but passes it off as nothing. Later, this moment will be more important for her.

Then Vicki gets bitten and Jeremy and Elena find her. And Bonnie says:

Bonnie: Elena, there’s no way I’m psychic. I know that. But whatever I saw, or I think I saw, I have this feeling…
Elena: Bonnie, what?
Bonnie: That it’s just the beginning.

That sounds like the beginning of a love story, Bonnie.

Elena: People aren’t going to stop giving you breaks, Jer. They just don’t care anymore. They don’t remember that our parents are dead, because they’ve got their own lives to deal with. The rest of the world has moved on. You should try, too.
Jeremy: I’ve seen you in the cemetery writing in your diary. Is that—is that supposed to be you moving on?

Nothing I haven’t commented upon before. Elena keeps trying to convince herself about something but she never really follows her own advice.

Elena: Dear diary, I couldn’t have been more wrong. I thought that I could smile, nod my way through it; pretend like it would all be ok.
Stefan: I had a plan. I wanted to change who I was; create a life as someone new, someone without the past.
Elena: Without the pain.
Elena/Stefan: Someone alive.
Elena: But it’s not that easy. The bad things stay with you.
Stefan: They follow you. You can’t escape them, as much as you want to.

Elena: All you can do is be ready for the good. So when it comes, you invite it in, because you need it. I need it.

I think this sums up the pilot episode completely from Elena’s perspective. She failed at her plan to get through the day by pretending and being someone new. I like the emphasis on someone “new” throughout the episode because in the beginning the reason why Stefan lightened up Elena’s world was because he was new and he cared and that is what she needed in that moment. I mean if you look at their relationship before she got to know he was a vampire it was quite ordinary and nothing that’d catch your eye. Then she got to know he was a vampire and at first she was apalled but then she felt safe around him because he couldn’t die like her parents and she clung on to him. As she said in 3x22, he came into her life when she needed someone and she fell for him instantly. I can be certain that if some other guy came in his place, she would have fallen for him. She didn’t fall in love with who he was at first but who he represented.

And then Stefan comes over

Stefan: I know it’s late. But, uh…I needed to know that you were ok.
Elena: You know, for months, that’s all anyone’s wondered about me. If I’ll be ok.
Stefan: What do you tell them?
Elena: That I’ll be fine.
Stefan: Do you ever mean it?
Elena: Ask me tomorrow. It’s warmer in the house. We can talk. Would you like to come in?
Stefan: Yes.

This echoes Elena’s diary entry while she was in the graveyard. Someone noticed that she didn’t mean it. So taking her own advice she invited him in because he represented what was good and what she needed in that moment. Damon, however, is a completely different story. She didn’t fall in love with him because she needed him and neither did she intend to. It just happened.
