The relationship between Caroline and Matt has been one of the most evolved storyline of the characters on the show. At first, they were not really close, afterwards, Matt brought Caroline home from the grill because she was drunk, and when they figured they had similar troubles and had no one besides eachother to discuss their problems with, they enjoyed each others company and fell in love with each other. He took care of her and stayed with her. She wanted to be a better person because of him. He thinks her neurotic side is cute. They were two lost souls, finding comfort in the person they never expected to.
Caroline was distraught after Damon called her shallow and useless. She got drunk and started talking to Matt who tried to cheer her up. Eventually, he had to take her home. Matt took Caroline to her room but as he made to leave, Caroline called him back as she didn't want to be alone. Matt spent the rest of the night with her. That was the begining of their friendship and a love story. Caroline felt constantly insecure about Matt's history with Elena. He wasn't helping her to think differently. In the end, he asured her she's the one.
Caroline was seriously injured in the accident and Matt is scared he would lose another person he cares about. Caroline survives, but becomes a vampire, which makes their relationship even more complicated. She tries to control herself for him, but ends up hurting him. Despite the fact he's her connection with humanity she makes him break up with her for his safety. After a while, they still love each other, but Caroline's secret is holding her back. She sings him a song and they are back together. Happiness is short, Caroline is forced to tell him the truth. Matt is confused and angry. Caroline is heartbroken when he demands from her to make him forget. It was just an act, Matt drank verbain. Seemingly, they are together, virtually happy, at least Caroline is. Matt has tough time being with her. He realizes that his Caroline still exists and that makes him even more confused. Finally, they have an honest talk and Matt admits he has no part in her life no longer.

They try to act normal but for some time it doesn't really work. Tyler injects her with verbain, Matt brings her home. He plans with Bonnie and Elena suprise for her birthsday. They are close again. She's protective around him and doesn't want him to get hurt. He just wants her to be happy.
